In honour of Canada's 157th birthday1, I share an interview with Canada’s own, Richard Comely, creator of Captain Canuck.
In this interview, Richard Comely describes how in 1975, with a personal loan and help from a local printer, he created, drew, wrote, edited, and published Captain Canuck. After a long dry spell, Canada finally had its own comic magazine and its very own national super hero.
Richard Comely has since been inaugurated into the Canadian Comic Book Hall of Fame and recognized with a Joe Shuster Award2.
Since 1975 Captain Canuck has graced a Canadian postage stamp, starred in a CBC radio program and is featured in both a web series and a recent comic book relaunch.
This 2014 interview starts off running. Comely begins by talking about Marvel Comics’ Alpha Flight, and its Canadian member vindicator and the importance of defending one’s intellectual property rights.
Enjoy!
Canada Day is on July 1st.
Joe Shuster is the Canadian co-creator of Superman. Jerry Siegel was Shuster’s partner and fellow creator of Superman.
